4.3 Production management

4.3.1 Definition of a production in Carbulator

In Carbulator, a production corresponds to a natively digital production created by one or more studios. Carbulator allows you to enter the resources mobilised for the production process (human, material, and external resources) and then generate its carbon footprint report. A production may take the form of a single film (short or feature-length), or of an episode, a series, or a full season.

Only 2D, 3D, or real-time 3D animation productions are supported. Stop-motion productions, video games, and virtual reality productions are not covered by Carbulator.

4.3.2 Declaring a production

To add a production:

  1. Go to the Production section in the side panel.
  2. Click [+ Add a production].
  3. Enter the requested information.
4.3.3 Clarification: budget and duration to be entered depending on studio status

Depending on your role in the production, the budget and duration values to be entered may differ:

Case 1 – Production studio: your studio is the production studio (project lead, and responsible for submitting the carbon footprint report to a legal authoritie (like CNC in France):

  • Budget: enter the total budget of the production. If the production is supported by an institution, enter the official budget.
  • Duration: enter the full duration of the production you are producing (film, full season, etc.).

Case 2 – Manufacturing studio – Provider: your studio acts as a manufacturing studio (a service provider producing part of the production without being responsible for any reporting):

  • Budget: enter the share of the budget managed by your studio as part of the service provided.
  • Total duration: enter the duration delivered by your studio (for example: a sequence, an episode). If your contribution concerns only elements without a specific duration (character modelling, sets, layout, etc.), enter 0 minutes.

Note: if your studio acts as both producer and manufacturer, Case 1 applies.

4.3.4 Entering or editing a production’s activity data

Once the production has been created, you can then enter one or more annual datasets with it. You can access its page with the button [> Datasets].

Warning: make sure that all studios within your organisation involved in the production have their activity data entered for all years covered by the production.
If this is not the case, the calculation of the production’s carbon footprint will be incomplete or incorrect.

  • Create a new dataset if none exists yet.
  • Entering or editing studio data with the button [Modify]
  • You will then be taken to the structured form for your studio’s activity data

→ You can find detailed explanations for this data in the section ACTIVITY DATA
