1. PREAMBLE

1.1 Presentation of Carbulator

Carbulator is a tool designed to assess and quantify carbon emissions related to the production of a natively digital production (a complete production or a sequence integrated into another production), as well as those of the studio(s) that contributed to its creation.

In France, Carbulator makes it possible, in particular, to produce both a forecast carbon emission report and an actual carbon emission report for the measured production, in order to meet the French CNC eco-conditionality requirement (effective from 1 March 2025).

1.2 Types of productions covered

The productions whose carbon footprint can be calculated using Carbulator are defined according to the following criteria:

  • Animation production: 2D, 3D, real-time 3D techniques
  • Audiovisual sector: Episode, Series/Season, Single programme
  • Cinema sector: Short film, Feature film

Carbulator does not allow the calculation of the following types of productions:

  • Stop-motion films
  • Video games
  • Virtual Reality productions
1.3 Carbon emission reports generated

The following carbon emission reports are available following completion of the required data:

  • Annualised carbon emission report for a studio (i.e. any building infrastructure declared as such). For each calendar year for which activity data has been entered, a specific carbon emission report is generated.
  • Carbon emission report for a production. For each produced production for which activity data has been entered, a specific carbon emission report is generated. The reporting period corresponds to the declared start and end dates.

Notes for french productions

  • The CNC format is an Excel file structured according to CNC standards, intended to form part of a financial support application file.
Important: emission categories are not fully represented. As a result, there may be an apparent difference, at first glance, between what is displayed in the CNC export and in Carbulator (which provides a more comprehensive accounting). This is entirely normal and does not constitute an error.
Note: submission of this carbon emission report to the CNC is the responsibility of its author. Carbulator is not an official platform for submitting applications.
